Denver Water wants to hire lawn patrol staff to enforce restrictions next summer
Colorado’s largest water utility will vote today on a dedicated drought patrol staff, expecting watering limits for much of 2027 Denver Water is seeking rate increases in response to drought restrictions expected to continue through next summer. The proposal includes a new lawn patrol staff to enforce restrictions on homeowners with large irrigated lawns who are draining resources. The average single-family home among Denver Water's 1.5 million customers would see a 5.7% increase in monthly charges to $60.21. Suburban customers would also see their rates rise 7.9%, to an average of $61.57 a month. The higher rates also fund ongoing projects like the expansion of Gross Reservoir in Boulder County and replacing lead pipe line connections in older neighborhoods. The vote comes as Denver Water points to the success of stepped-up enforcement following the end of this summer's summer watering season, which saw fines increased from 110 to $265,000.
