The company is pursuing a battery project on Electric Avenue. Really.

A Boulder-based battery storage developer is seeking to build on a Boston suburb's street that's aptly named to play host to the renewable-energy transition: Electric Avenue.

Flatiron Energy wants to put a two-story, 55,200-square-foot battery energy storage system facility at 35 Electric Ave., in Brighton, Massachusetts, currently home to contracting company The Welch Corp., according to a letter of intent filed Monday with the Boston Planning and Development Agency.

The three-year-old firm, which is headquartered in Colorado but has a Boston office, is looking to build and operate multiple utility-scale, standalone energy-storage projects on the East Coast, including Massachusetts. It has received financial backing from Maryland-based Hull Street Energy, a private equity firm focused on decarbonizing the power sector.

Flatiron is also seeking to build a storage facility on Eastern Avenue in Chelsea, a community north of Boston.

A Flatiron partner did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the filing.

The filing for the project in Brighton refers to the proposed development as Project Lite Brite. The Electric Avenue property is 2.8 acres that now feature buildings that total 27,000 square feet and more than 100 parking spaces.

Flatiron’s BPDA filing does not reference the proposed facility’s energy capacity.

The company a certified B Corporation that says its mission is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat environmental injustice. It is listed on its LinkedIn profile as having fewer than 10 employees.

Battery storage has become a sought-after replacement for electricity generated from burning fossil fuels and as a way to store power generated by renewable energy systems.
