History
Aurora began as a Fletcher town in the 1880s. The name was taken from Denver business man Donald Fletcher, who regarded the place as a property project. Fletcher and his co-owners claimed the rights of Denver's four square miles (10 km 2), which was also badly raked by Colorado after the silver price collapse in 1893. At this point Fletcher had forgotten the existence of the town and the community was left in deep debt. The residents decided to change the name of the town to Aurora in 1907, and slowly grew behind Denver, but from the late 1970s to the 1980s, it became the largest growing city in the United States.
While the Aurora had been regarded as one of the rather large suburbs of Denver for a long time, the population growth over the last few decades (now more than half of Denver City) has come to be recognized as being equal to the large neighbor, the Denver City. The former mayor once expressed his somewhat whimsical idea that the area would be called the "Aurora Denver Metropolitan Area." However, such a movement has stopped because the city has no historically important central business district, which means that most of the area is located in the suburbs.
In the autumn of 1955, the world's attention gathered at Aurora for only seven weeks. because President Dwight D. Eisenhower was recuperating from a heart attack at the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center. The hospital was also the birthplace of John Kerry, a Democratic candidate for the United States presidential election in 2004. The facility ended its role as a hospital in 1999 and is now part of the Anschutz Medical Campus at the University of Colorado, Denver, and the Aurora Biological Science Park in Colorado. The Anschutz Medical Campus also has the University of Colorado Hospital, which moved from Denver to Aurora in 2007. These facilities will hire 32,000 people when they are completed.
In 2004, Aurora City acted as another model for promoting and strengthening sports, so she was chosen as the "sports town" in Colorado for her 50th anniversary commemoration project for the magazine "Sports Illustrated." The activity of the people of Aurora reflected the presence of various professional sports players from the city. Aurora Cabarli of the International Basketball League, the first pro sports team based in Aurora, started working in 2006 but stopped working until the end of the season due to financial collapse.
The city of Aurora had been unnaturally straddled over two counties, and was separated from the location of the county office of both counties. In the mid-1990s, the joint government of the city and the county was considered, but it failed without approval from the city voters. Voters in Colorado established Denver City County in 1902 and Bloomfield City County in 2001. If the Aurora Integrated City County was established, it would include areas outside the present city area, but if a new city county boundary was established, it would limit the possibility of future development.
On July 20, 2012, a shooting incident occurred at the Century Movie Theater in the city, killing 12 people and injuring 59 people. James Eger Holmes was arrested as a suspect in this case.
On December 26, 2016, a riot of about 100 people occurred on a food court in the city which was crowded with business after Christmas, and the scale of the street spread to nearby movie theaters and parking lots.
geography
Aurora was 39 degrees 41 minutes 45 seconds north latitude 104 degrees 48 minutes 29 seconds west longitude/39.69583 degrees north latitude 104.80806 degrees west longitude/ 39.69583 degrees west longitude; -104.80806. The official elevation of the city is 5,471 feet (1,668 meters) at the mark on the city border. However, the difference in elevation in the city is close to 1,000 feet (300 meters). The 5,285 feet (1,611 meters) minimum altitude is the point where Sand Creek meets the border at the northwest corner of the city, and the 6,229 feet (1,899 meters) maximum altitude is the border between the southern edge of the city and Arapaho County near the point where the Inspiration Road and the Gartrelle Road meet.
According to the National Census Bureau, the total area of the city is 142.7 square miles (369.7 km2), the land area is 142.5 square miles (369.1 km2), the water surface is 0.2 square miles (0.6 km 2), and the water area is 0.17%.
The Aurora straddles Interstate Expressway Route 70, Route 225 and E-470 Beltway. The light rail transport system in the Regional Transportation District was extended to the southern end of Aurora City on November 17, 2006. The G and H lines stop at Dayton and Nine Mile in Aurora City. The comprehensive bus route network in the southern part of Aurora stops at Nine Mile Station. A plan is to extend the light rail along the Inter-State Expressway Route 225, which passes through the city, and it will be connected to the commuter line between Denver Central Street and Denver International Airport. Both are scheduled to be completed in 2015. The citizens of Aurora are more convenient to travel to Denver International Airport than to Denver. The proximity to the Denver International Airport is expected to contribute to the expected growth in the airport's South E-470 corridor, eventually increasing the number of Aurora citizens by 250,000.
